We performed in 2005 for the memorial event that celebrated the 40th anniversary of normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and Korea. We hope tell our spirit to the audience in Japan, just like we did to the people in Korea.

We put our wish “Keep the Spirit of Awa” into the name of our group: the kanji “shi” means “spirit,” “ru” means “to keep,” and if you switch “ba” and “a” it reads “Awa.” Our motto has always been “Enjoy dancing regardless of your age!”

Time has passed so fast since we first founded the group and joined the 8th Koenji Awaodori Festival in 1964. This will be the 43rd time for us to perform in the festival this year. Feel the homey and friendly atmosphere in the well-balanced harmony of our music and dance.

To pursue the spirit of Tokushima Awaodori, we go on expeditions to Tokushima and perform in the festivals there in spring and summer. We practice hard throughout the year to tell our audience the spirit of Tokushima through the orthodox sound of shamisen and flutes.

Elegant dance, and the colors and flavors or Tokushima that comes from zomeki (buzz) ─ Zomeki Renjyu has been working hard for over 20 years to pursue the enjoyment and elegance of Tokushima Awaodori, by studying to one of the prestigious ren groups of Tokushima.

In 2005, we celebrated our 40th anniversary and having developed to such a big group with 150 members. We have been a sister ren group of Hiewa Ren of Tokushima since 1971, and we also have sisterhood relationships with Kagura Ren, Nakamurabashi Ren and Yamato-shimbashi Ren of Tokyo area. Together with these sisterhood ren groups, Tengu Ren expects even further growth of the group.

Tensui refers to people who are so devoted to Awaodori dance that they don’t think they “need nothing else other than the water (sui) coming down from Heaven (ten) and Awaodori.” All of our group members practice hard throughout the year with this tensui spirit in their hearts.

Hanabishi Ren was founded in 1966 as a ren group with only male dancers. The happi coat is now considered one of the typical sights of Awaodori dance, but it was Hanabishi Ren who brought it into the Koenji Awaodori Festival. We always try to do something new.
